So you have decided that the garden requires another plant. You would like a plant that is of Australian origin, a coastal plant that has yellow flowers that bloom in Autumn and has a maximum height of 4 metres. What would you choose?

Well using PlantFile and the above limits you have a choice of four species ; one acacia and three different types of Banksia. You are able to select a specific record and read a much more detailed report on the plant.

PlantFile online is a comprehensive new resource for teachers and students of horticulture, landscape design and related courses. The database offers detailed information on common pest and diseases for related plants. There is information on over 8,000 plants with details on 3,000 species accompanied with over 24,000 photographs. You can create selected plant lists and turn all reports into a PDF for easy emailing.

This a great database for horticultural students and teachers at TAFE. The information provided also includes

42 categories of information and up to 5 detailed photos on each plant.

Comprehensive glossaries with over 400 botanic terms and fundamentals of plant structure (ie. leaf, flower, fruit, bark, growth habit).

Comprehensive pest and disease information and images that are cross referenced with relevant plants.

Phonetic spelling and pronunciation of all names

You can find this database at General OneFile (Infotrac). Infotrac is accessible from the library PC’s as well from home. To locate the database go to the Sydney Institute Library databases page , click on database login page link and follow the prompts.

All too often we consider academic qualifications as the best option and that is a valid point. However, we must take into consideration that as well as studying at university, TAFE is also an option available to a prospective student. TAFE courses provide great opportunities to develop a solid foundation for future employment across a wide variety of sectors.

We would like to draw your attention to a very useful and informative website called Skillsone. Click on the above image to find out more. SkillsOne attempts to promote and improve the perceptions of vocational education and training particularly in traditional trades. Skills One has hundreds of videos that you can watch about getting a skill or trade. An example of some of the information available SkillsOne – Building for Boaties. It is on the Boat building industry and what it takes to be a successful boat builder.

At Ultimo College Library we have a solid collection in this field. We have books on Seamanship, navigation, Marine Engineering as well as books on maintenance and repair of boats. Most of these items can be found in the Dewey area 623. The items listed below are a small sample of the lending items that we carry and can be found on Level 2.
