The National Library of Australia has negotiated an agreement on behalf of Australian libraries which gives access to WorldCat, the world’s largest bibliographic database with over one billion items from 11,000 libraries worldwide. The collaborative services agreement has been negotiated between the National Library and the Online Computer Library Centre (OCLC) which manages the WorldCat database. Jan Fullerton AO, National Library Director General, said that Australian bibliographic records would be more accessible to millions of researchers worldwide. In turn, the cataloguing records from 110 countries would be available to Libraries Australia subscribers. NLA Media release, 11 May 2007. From The Networker, EdNA Newsletter 21/5/07
Online encyclopaedia to catalogue world’s species
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200705/s1918248.htm
Scientists say all 1.8 million known plant and animal species will be listed in an Internet-based Encyclopaedia of Life under a $US100 million ($A120.8 million) project. The 10-year scheme, launched with initial grants of $US15.1 million from two US-based foundations, could aid everyone from children with biology homework to governments planning how to protect endangered species. The free encyclopaedia will blend text, photographs, maps and videos in a common format for each. It will focus mainly on animals, plants and fungi, with microbes to follow. ABC News, 9 May 2007.
