Webwiser – RSS Feeds

February 1st, 2010 Posted by mcarrolo in Be WebWiser | Post a Comment »

Did you know that by using RSS feeds you can bring all the latest updates from your favourite websites to your desktop?

So What does RSS Stand for?…….RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication

You can use a reader (which means going to ONE web page rather than several) and have all the information come to you! There are many readers available such as iGoogle, Google Reader, My Yahoo, Bloglines etc. that can be used for this purpose.

Don’t forget to add the Ultimo Library Blog to your RSS!

If you would like to know more about RSS feeds and how they can be used all explained in plain English view the Youtube video below or click here for further information.

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

New books – languages

January 21st, 2010 Posted by mcarrolo in New Books | Post a Comment »

If you learnt a second language, think about the opportunities!

Opportunities that would allow you to get to know many more people and places; opportunities for you to read international newspapers, magazines and books. You could watch other movies and TV programs and access a whole new world on the internet.  You may even get that job you want because of your ability to speak a second language .

At Ultimo TAFE Library we have boosted our language section with a collection of new books. We have added Indonesian, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Chinese language books. Language books and kits can be found on Level 2 between the dewey numbers 430 and 499.

These items will be on display on Level 2 New book stand. Have a look and feel free to borrow any that you find interesting.

FYI….. I came across a website titled Australian decorative pottery of the 1930’s promoting Australian pottery. As quoted by the website – “This is a collection of commercial handmade lead-glazed decorative pottery made in Australia between the world wars. The items in this collection were discovered between 1992 and the present in shops and auctions in Victoria and Tasmania”. Enter their website here to to view a gallery of images. From the gallery, you can view close-ups of the pottery and read a brief history of that manufacturer if you wish.

Webwiser : National Film & Sound Archive

December 21st, 2009 Posted by mcarrolo in Be WebWiser | Post a Comment »

National film and sound archive

Watch Moving Image Material Online from australianscreen online

The National Film and Sound Archive’s australianscreen online is an interactive web-based resource that provides access to a wide variety of moving image material. It encompasses nearly 1400 Australian feature films, documentaries, advertisements and television programs from the last 110 years.

A diverse selection of titles from the National Archives, dating from the late 1930s to the 1990s, can be viewed on australianscreen online. This selection contains films about nuclear tests, banking and military operations.

All titles Features Short features Documentaries
Television programs Short films Advertisements All people
Home movies Newsreels Historical footage About ASO

You can search via title, type of film i.e. documentary or short film etc. as well as a timeline if you like. Or if thats not your style… then try searching via genre, indigenous content or by decade starting from the 1890’s. Of course this is only a snippet of what you can do with this database.

Check out the above links for specific types of media. You can find out about some amazing facts and view some never before seen footage of Australian media. Then take the Screen trivia quiz and see how much you know about Australian media.

We have at the library a multitude of texts and databases that would work hand in hand with the National Film and Sound Archive’s australianscreen database. It would work for fashion, music, advertising, history…. just  a few areas that we specialise in.

The IT Team and all staff @ Ultimo TAFE Library would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season.

It is of course.. the season to be jolly. So lots of fun was had by staff at the Ultimo Library Christmas party. As for the IT Team attempt at Karaoke… it might be better if we stick to our day jobs. We scored 23/100.

Merry Christmas and a Happy new year every one :)

WHAT WE DONT DO

  • Provide cookies, stationery, change for a twenty or milk
  • Provide refunds for the vending machine located in the library foyer : see Tim- canteen manager
  • Conduct a reference interview like the librarian above
  • Wear bow ties and wear lots of beige

WHAT WE DO

  • Provide you with access to books, CDs, DVDs, journals and Electronic databases and a whole lot more
  • Aim to assist you with  a reference interview designed  to find out what information you are really after
  • Empower you with knowledge (via workshops and tours) that will allow you to use the library facilities independently
  • Embrace all walks of life and treat staff and students with dignity and respect
  • Assist in making the library visit a pleasant experience

WHAT WE’D LIKE FROM YOU

  • Be mindful of others in the library and respect that  many students and staff frequent the space.
  • Be aware that some people find mobile phones ringing in the library off putting. Perhaps place mobile phones on silent and take the call to an area where others will not be disturbed
  • Be able to come and ask us if you need some assistance … say for example learning how to use the catalogue or use a database.
  • Take your belongings with you where ever you go in the library. Thefts have occurred here
  • Not eat food in the library. We prefer not to feed the roaches.
