Australia’s largest student survey now underway

More than 300,000 students will be asked to rate the nation’s vocational education and training system as the Student Outcomes Survey begins.

Managed by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), the survey provides information on the employment outcomes and satisfaction with training of students who completed some vocational training in 2010.

The survey is voluntary and the information provided helps improve the training system for future students.

Students can also go into a draw to win a share in an $11,000 cash prize pool just by taking part in the survey, which closes in mid-August 2011.

The survey is conducted on behalf of the Australian, state and territory governments. Results will be available on the NCVER website in late 2011.

More students enrol in VET courses across Australia

A new National Centre for Vocational Education Research publication shows that 1.8 million students enrolled in the public vocational education and training (VET) system in 2010, up 5.4% from 2009.

NCVER report on adult language, literacy and numeracy

NCVER has released the outcomes of the September 2010 forum on adult language, literacy and numeracy The forum aimed to identify knowledge gaps and contribute to the future research agenda and policy directions. The forum was attended by researchers, providers and adult literacy and numeracy experts from government departments, industry bodies and the Productivity Commission.

Adult literacy and numeracy is a big issue in Australia. The Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALLS) survey shows that around half of Australia’s adult population has literacy and numeracy skills below the minimum level required to adequately function in an advanced economy. Low levels of skills have been found to have negative impacts on productivity, social participation and general health and wellbeing.

This briefing paper draws together findings from two LSAY (Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth) research reports: ‘Participation in and progress through New Apprenticeships’; and the ‘VET pathways taken by school leavers’. These two reports use data obtained from young people who were in Year 9 at school in 1995 and whose educational and occupational activities were traced each year thereafter. Student characteristics, fields of training, commencement and completion rates, and reasons for discontinuing are all explored. This paper, published by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is part of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth research program.
