Well, the first two weeks of December have been hectic for library staff. There have been conferences/meetings and a training day to attend in this non-teaching week. Students are winding down for the year, but staff still have a few loose ends to tidy up before we turn off the lights.

Back to the AFLF Conference – this event was held at the UNSW on 4-5 December 2008. Participants came from Tafe, RTOs, industry such as mining, nursing and collectives. There were innovative speakers leading the way into using new technologies for learning and connecting. Capture everything, share everything, open everything was a mainstream theme coming through.

St George College Library has been working for some time to ensure that we started to develop some online resources to assist staff and students of the college to learn about the library and the effective use of the library to access information resources.
Earlier this year, in conjunction with staff from Sutherland College Library, Gymea Campus and teachers from EFS (English for further study) at both locations we put in for funding from the AFLF (Australian flexible learning framework) to run a joint project to produce resources about using the library and conducting effective searches for quality information. We are very pleased to announce that we were granted the funding and now we are able to continue to produce our modules as a dedicated project rather than having to continually try and fit them in around all of our regualr duties.
The EFS teachers are offering their expertises in what students studying from non-English speaking backgrounds need in the way of instruction, how detailed the modules need to be and what the priorities are. Library staff are producing the modules for the EFS teachers to check to make sure they are what the students need. iLectures are being created using Captivate and Presenter softwares, with podcasts and demonstrations in the form of digital stories supplementing. This is also providing an excellent opportunity for library staff at both locations to increase their knowledge and skills in these new technologies.
