Come and see the swimsuit designs by our Fashion students displayed in the library for Library and Information Week. Building and Architecture have some things on show too, and the Library is sharing its story with a photo montage and also a history display.

The paper folding art of origami is being demonstrated in the viewing area of the library. Watch the DVD, and learn your way to making all sorts of fantastic objects. Enter your work into the competition for a chance to win a prize.

National Simultaneous Storytime @ St George

On Wednesday 22 May, the children of Kameruka Cottage Childcare Centre will be joining us at St George College Library for National Simultaneous Storytime. Thousands of other children in various libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country will be part of the event.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. It aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian childrens book that explores age appropriate themes. This year, The wrong book by Nick Bland will be read where the story of Nicholas Ickle is shared.

Come and see artworks by the children from Kameruka Cottage inspired by their favourite storybook characters.

St George College Library has a range of activities for you to participate in to win prizes donated by your Student Association. Do the Library Quiz to find out how well you know your library. Weekend systems downtime

The Library catalogue - TAFEcat will not be available from 4:00am Saturday 18^th May until Saturday evening. If problems are encountered, then TAFEcat may also be down on Sunday. It is anticipated that the catalogue will be available by Monday morning.

Due to regular, scheduled maintenance of DEC systems, the following TAFE applications will be unavailable from 5.30AM Saturday 18th May to 6.00PM Sunday 19th May.
The DEC Portal (staff and students) will also be unavailable.
During this maintenance period users of the DEC Portal will see a message advising them that the system is temporarily unavailable.
Please note: Email will not be affected by this maintenance.
As per standard process, a confirmation will be posted on the DEC Portal once the maintenance window is closed.

How safe is your search?

A recent study, carried out over 18 months, showed that the top search engines – among them Google and Bing are delivering Malware websites within the top results presented to the searcher. AV-TEST – the independent IT-Security Institute tested over 40 million sites over the 18 month period and found that all search engines returned results that contained at least some malware.
Google had the best result with only around 300 malware returned in the sites examined. Bing was ten times worse with almost 1,300 malware sights returned. The worst of the search engines that were tested was the Russian based engine YANDEX which returned well over 3,000 malware sites.
How big a risk is malware? As of March 2013 there were over 110 million active pieces of malware on the internet with more coming every day, which means that each day your risk of going to an infected website increases.
So, how can you avoid getting malware on your PC? One way is to have up-to-date, high quality security software. If your searching is for your studies at TAFE – an even better way is to make sure you use the library online resources – eBooks, streamed videos, databases, chapters, eReserve and more. Our products, as well as being from authoritative sources and of high quality will never contain malware. Help refresh Sydney TAFE’s brand and win $5000.

Sydney TAFE is calling current and past students and staff to help us come up with a new brand identity for the Institute.

Get your creative juices flowing and help develop a new logo, visual elements and a tag line.

Show us how it would work across online, print and advertising materials.

Shortlisted candidates must provide a style manual with the winner receiving $5000 on supply of all specified artwork files.

Easter Holiday Library Hours

ITD will be conducting various system maintenance tasks this Sunday,17 March.

The maintenance work will require that various servers and databases be shut down. In order to minimise the impact on core business operations, the work has been scheduled on a Sunday.

As a result, TAFEcat will not be available from Saturday night until Sunday evening.
Also, TAFE Applications will be unavailable from 5:30am to 10:00pm. This includes online enrolment, Student eServices, Equella, and DEC Portal. During this maintenance users of the DEC Portal will see a message advising them that the system is temporarily unavailable.

New loan conditions

During 2012 the library at St George College conducted a student survey. From these responses the library will be introducing a number of changes in 2013.
The first of these changes involved students wanting more flexibility with loan limits. In response to this request library staff have amended the limits that we apply to loans. While you can still only have on loan 10 items from St George Library at any one time all 10 of these can now be print materials (magazines and books). If you wish to borrow audio visual materials (DVDs, VHS, CD, CDROM, etc.) you can still have up to 4 of those on your card at any one time. Just remember that you can’t go over the maximum of 10 loans on your card from St George at any one time.
Library staff would love some feedback about these new loan limits.

New arrival books for Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6)

Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6) introduced in 2012 brings improvements to this well-known software package. The package contains updates to the popular Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro and more.
For those who are familiar with the Adobe Creative Suite, the new version brings much of the same functionality. Improvements seen in Adobe CS6 include better performance and speed as well some interface improvements.
We have new arrival books for either new users or those have many years’ experiences. The short list attached below and we have many more please ask:

What’s happening in November at your library

Our last Community Jigsaw seemed to be completed in record time. The finished puzzle was a picture of a tiger and fits well with October’s theme for the National Year of Reading theme which was “Explore”. The next puzzle, which is coming along well at the moment, depicts a picture of some adorable meerkats. Come and explore the library and see if you can help finish the puzzle before the end of term!

Please also be aware of our new noticeboard at the entrance to the library. Keep watch for the library opening hours both now and for the Christmas holidays.
