As we head towards the end of the year, many student assignments are due, this means that the library computers and printers are in extremely high demand. In order to submit your assignment on time, we recommend students plan ahead and do not wait until the last minute to complete or print assignments.
If you are printing a large document with images, it is recommended that you print your assignment in batches so the printer memory is not overloaded.
If you are a member of the Student Association, you can print and photocopy at half price if your card is activated at the Student Association office in Building D.

The Australian War Memorial states, that at 11 am on 11 November, 1918 the guns of the Western Front finally fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare signifying the end of World War 1. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month became significant in the post-war years and the allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. Originally called Armistice Day, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day after World War II. In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane reaffirmed the significance of Remembrance Day by urging all Australians to observe one minute’s silence at 11 am on 11 November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
This year’s Remembrance Day poster marks the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), commemorated on 10 July 2011, and pays tribute to the role and contribution of the Royal Australian Navy in Australian wartime history and its strength as part of today’s Defence Force.
So why do we wear red silk poppies on Remembrance Day? The tradition has its origins in a poem written in 1915, called “In Flanders Fields”, which describes poppies growing between the crosses. Another poem written in 1918 describes wearing a poppy “in honour of our dead”. Silk poppies were first sold in Australia on Armistice Day in 1921 by the RSL to raise money for those who had been incapacitated by the war. Since then wearing a poppy has enabled Australians to show they have not forgotten the more than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars and conflicts during the past 100 years.

The Library hosted two National Literacy and Numeracy Week Days on Wednesday 31 August and Thursday 1 September. Activities included a Sustainability Quiz based on a PowerPoint presentation developed for the event, played on our wide screen DVD/CD viewer and wireless headset listening unit. There was also a Library Maze Hunt to find the letters of ‘Literacy’ placed strategically around the library to take participants to the dictionaries and Literacy Collection, questions about new items added to the Literacy Collection, and a fill the speech bubble exercise based on a video clip running on the wide screens in the group study rooms. Thank you to teachers and students who took part in the event and made it a success.

On Thursday 25th August, one of our St George College librarians conducted a storytime poetry session about places where children live in the world for Children’s Book Week. Our librarian provided a map and world globe for the children at Kameruka Childcare Centre and showed them where Australia is situated compared to the rest of the world. The pre-schoolers were enthralled with the session and participated in the storytime activities and later concluded the session by singing one of their favourite songs.

On Monday 15th August, the library paid a visit to Montgomery St campus. The Student Association provided free soup in the tea room and the library had many of their new books and DVDs on display. These new resources in the library were mainly for the fashion, design, graphic and fine arts courses, as well as some new titles for health. Sorry if we missed you, but feel free to visit us in the library to view many new books and DVDs. Also, many new titles are shown and regularly updated on the subject guides which are available via the library website. Just go to the subject guide relevant to your course and scroll down to the “New items in the library” box.
