Hi, my name is Linda and I am currently studying the Diploma course in Library and Information Services at Ultimo TAFE. In the final part of the course we have to undertake Industry Placement where we work in a library to gain on-the-job experience. Hence, I am working at St. George TAFE library for 2 days a week for 10 weeks. This is my second week and the staff have kindly given me an overview of all the different areas of work within the library. I have been on the circulation desk a few times already and carried out shelving which has to be done regularly. I am also learning about Serials, Interlibrary loans, Acquisitions and preparing the new books for the shelf. So if you are in the library and see someone with a “Trainee” badge, come and say “Hi”. As a Communication Skills student, I am fortunate to have my Work Experience in the library. It is a wonderful experience. I feel I have learnt a lot. I learned how to do shelving, according to the Dewey system, how to do an Inter-Library Loan, how to order new books, etc.

One of the interesting things I did was setting up a display for National Recycling Week. I chose some books and videos from our libray resource for the display.

In the last semester of the course Diploma in Library Information Services, it is very glad for me to have opportunity to work as a trainee in ST.George TAFE library. With the guide and help from my friendly colleagues, I have effectively enhanced my understanding of the knowledge learned from the lectures by performing the real library works. I am very grateful for the team’s encouragement, support and helping. The ST.George TAFE library is a modern, comprehensive and very resourceful library which serves the teaching and learning requirements. One of my impressive feelings about the library is that it updates the library resources frequently by ordering the various newly published such as magazines and books, multimedia and computer resources.

Kerin’s Work Experience in the Library

As a student enrolled in the Diploma of Library Studies at Ultimo TAFE, I have been very fortunate to be granted my work placement at St George TAFE Library. My co-workers have been extremely encouraging, patient and eager to pass on their industry knowledge of which I am very grateful. As well, the students and staff have been patient and considerate in my dealings with them.

The Library offers some great resources to students and staff and the Library staff are always happy to help. The computers are extremely popular with programs such as MYOB, Typequick, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and more. Please be aware that the busiest time of the day for computer bookings is between 11 am – 1 pm so, if possible, perhaps schedule your computer times outside these hours to ensure a booking.

Sulian Chen’s Experience in St. George Library

Hello,everyone. I am Sulian Chen, I’ve been in Australia for about half a year now. I’m from China. I’m doing the Communication Skills III in the St. George TAFE Library, Kogarah and now I’m doing my Work experience in this library from 27-04-2009 to 1-06-2009. During this period, I’m very lucky to get the chance to gain so much help from the other staff. Although this is my first work experience in the library industry and was challenging, I gained a better experience than I ever expected. I might have made some mistakes and got a little confused during this period but it was a good learning experience.
I’m really appreciate the advice that all the staff gave me during this period. Thank you all!
