Assignment time – Be Prepared …

As we head towards the end of the year, many student assignments are due, this means that the library computers and printers are in extremely high demand. In order to submit your assignment on time, we recommend students plan ahead and do not wait until the last minute to complete or print assignments.
If you are printing a large document with images, it is recommended that you print your assignment in batches so the printer memory is not overloaded.
If you are a member of the Student Association, you can print and photocopy at half price if your card is activated at the Student Association office in Building D.

New Look Library

Over the break, the library underwent a transformation. If you haven’t already seen the new carpeting in the library, here are a few pictures. We love the new look and would like to know what you think! Watch this space for more new developments in the library.

New equipment for Group Study Room 1

During the last two weeks, some new equipment has been installed in Group Study room 1 , that include a monitor, speakers and wall panel to allow for laptops etc. to be plugged in.

Please mention to library staff that you would like to use these equipments in group study room 1 when you do your room bookings.

St George College 2010 Information Evening

On Wednesday night 15th of September St George College Library hosted the 2010 Course Information Evening organised by St George College. Visitors had the opportunity to talk to staff about study and career options and services offered by the college.

Visitors had a chance to win one of the Lucky Door prizes:

1st prize- Dinner for two at Embark Restaurant, Loftus

2nd prize-Two IMAX Movie tickets

3rd prize- 8 Gig Flash Drive

New look for the library

We have been very busy over the holidays and you may notice these changes in the library:
1. the newspapers have been rehoused onto low shelving close to their previous location.
2. we have moved the music CDs into security cases and put them on open access.
3. we have a wonderful new stand for the NEW BOOK display.
4. we have rehoused the general collection paperbacks (mostly fiction) onto new shelving which as further opened up the browsing area to be lighter and brighter.
5. we have started a new collection of DVDs. While still related to courses taught at the college these new titles will be housed separately in the browsing area to help attract usage.

Don’t forget that we have DVD and CD facilities available in the library for you to borrow in-house if you want to watch or listen in your class breaks.

We also have some great board games that you can use to kill time, practice your English skills all while you keep warm in the library during the coldness of winter.

College Management have also kindly funded a repainting of some external areas of the library, brightening and freshening the look.

Library role in information literacy recognised and rewarded

For a number of years St George College Library has been fortunate enough to have a room in the library that the college had given to the lbirary for excusive use as a literacy room. This has meant that when teachers bring students in for literacy classes library staff have been able to give detailed instruction in literacy theory. The weakness has always been that to practice the theory students have had to move to a computer room within the library – this computer room can be difficult for library staff to use as teachers can prebook it class use. A further weakness with this set up is that all theory (up to one hour) must be given in one hit and then all hands on practice done in one go – not good teaching practice.
For several years library staff at St George have put together a proposal to obtain funds from the Institute to allow for the literacy room to be fitted out with computers. This year we were successful!!!! The library literacy room fit out is now complete and boast 16 computers, custom built desks, ergonomic chairs, a ceiling short throw projector, speakers and the capability to run VHS and DVD to the projector.
For the library staff this means that even if a teacher books a literacy session last minute they are guaranteed to have a room ready to go as the room can’t be booked by anyone else at the college. It means for students that they won’t need to listen to one hour of theory first – they can learn one aspect of literacy and practice it, listen to and learn the next section and practice it, etc.
Library staff at St George College wish to acknowledge the wonderful support of the College Management Team in recognising the important role that library staff play in increasing information literacy skills of students and in the need to library staff to always have a room at their disposal to run the many and varied information literacy sessions that they provide.
If library staff are not using the room and the library computer room is booked, teachers can also take classes into the literacy room.

Recycling your mobiles and ink jet cartridges

Did you know there is a facility onsite at St George College where you can do your bit and help save the environment?

In the Student Association common room there are 2 boxes where you can place your old unused mobile phones, and dispose of empty ink-cartridges.

By doing this you will help the environment by disposing of goods wisely and not filling your bin and then landfills. It also helps raise some funds for charity. Checkout the website below for more information.

Guide for connecting to the Wireless Network for students using laptops

Free of charge wireless network is available at St George College in the library and building F. To connect to the wireless network you must have your DET username and password. If you do not know or forget you username and password please contact the Student Administration Office or Library for assistance. Please see attached guide for connecting to the wireless network for step-by-step insructions.

There are no instructions for MACS.

The only browsers that can be used are Internet Explorer and Firefox, if you have another browser you can download Internet Explorer or Firefox.

A roof garden for the library.

Have you ever noticed the garbage bin that has adorned the library floor for about 8 years? It is there due to an ongoing problem with a leaking roof – not a great thing in a library! In the latest attempt to stem the flow, 2 plumbers have been investigating the roof and guess what they found? Unbeknown to library staff there has been a lovely garden growing on our roof, which it appears is causing or at least contributing to the leaking roof. Plants found on the roof included: 8 gum trees, wattle, oak and more. The plants were well established with some of the trees reaching over 1 meter high. All the plants have now been removed and we are hoping that in the next downpour of rain all the water will stay on the outside of the library.

Have you noticed our indoor plants that we have in the library? Do you think that plants in the library make it a more attractive place for you to socialise, study and relax? What else can we do to make the library environment more inviting – let us know?

Photocopying/Printing Update

The new system is up and running. Have you registered yet? If not, why not do so now? Library staff are happy to to help you go through the process.

The advantages of the new system are the EFTPOS facility; compatibilty across Sydney Institute colleges; and security due to your own PIN plus electronic credit storage so you no longer lose your money if you lose your TAFEcard.

If you are a Student Association member you will need to visit the Association (Building D, Ground Floor, Room 13) to arrange your 50% discount, or after hours email si.stgeorgestudentassoc@tafensw.edu.au with your full name, library barcode and student number.

N.B. Remember to log off after printing and press Enter after photocopying to exit your account.

The new system is almost upon us.
Remember,
1. You will need your username and password to register.
2. You will need to type in a 4 digit PIN number that you can easily remember.
3. Transfer any credit from your TAFEcard to your account
4. To copy you will need to type your PIN
5. Remember to logout.

New Photocopy and Printing System at St George Library

A new method of paying for photocopying and printing is to be installed in the library on 15 June 2009.

The new system will allow students to credit their TAFEcards using PayPal, EFTPOS or credit card. The existing re-load machine which allows cards to be credited by coins or notes will remain.

Existing money on TAFEcards can be transferred over to the new system using an EFTPOS Kiosk to be installed in the library. Library staff can show you how.

Students will require their DET usernames and passwords the first time they use the system to create a PIN, which is required to release print jobs and start photocopying jobs.

As most students are aware, the library student computers are heavily used. Library supervisors have lobbied the college management for sometime to allocate additional PCs to accommodate students needs. The good news is that we expect to have three or four more PCs for student use in the near future.

Happy New Year everybody!

New enrolments will be held in the Library on the 29th and 30th of January 2009 and 2nd February 2009 from 10am to 7pm.

As the Library is air conditioned, this should be a comfortable experience in the present hot , humid weather.

Locked out of the Photocopier?

When your TAFECard is locked out of the photocopier, email Bear Solutions with your name and barcode number and ask them to unlock it.
Bear Solutions are in the TAFE address book on Microsoft Outlook.
