Adult learners week display and Information Evening

Adult Learners Week is being observed from 1 – 8 September, and is designed to promote the benefits of learning – in the home, at work and in the community – and to highlight the many options available. The theme for this year, “Your learning journey: take the next step” is displayed for this week in the Library foyer display case. Come and take the next step of your learning journey and see what is on offer at the Information Evening on Wednesday 15th September, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the Library. Library services will be available until 8:00pm only.

Library and Information Week 2010 @ St George College Library

This is the week when libraries across Australia celebrate LIBRARY AND INFORMATION WEEK. As normal we are marking this occassion at St George with a range of activiteis.

This year the community jigsaw is a 500 piece Australia water birds one.

On Tuesday the children from the college child care center (Kameruka) will be joining us for storytime as we celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime with thousands of other children across Australia.

Wednesday sees us hosting a late morning tea and raising funds for the “Biggest morning tea” as we raise money for cancer research.

There are displays from sections at the college and also daily sessions where librayr staff will be training staff and students of the college in some of our newer products and resources such as the WSGN database, Moodle and more.

Our ever popular competitions are back – “Guess what is in the box”, “Guess how many lollies are in the jar” and our library quiz. All 3 carry some terrific prizes in the main donated by the St George College Student Assocation.

Come along and join us and have some fun and help us celebrate.

SKINT! Making do in the Great Depression Exhibition

Historic Houses Trust exhibition at the Museum of Sydney from 27 March until 25 July 2010.

This exhibition is an opportunity for the community to experience and/or recollect childhood memories of the depression times. Times were difficult with many people living on the breadline needing to eat bread and dripping to survive.

This was a time of incredible resourcefulness, resilience and a culture of “making do’ reusing and recycling and playing with makeshift toys.

The exhibition includes a film with interviews from Great Depression “survivors” speaking of their tough times recalling both heartbreak and humour.

What is happening at the Library!

The new semester is well under way and we are now looking towards the Easter break. The Library will be closed from Friday 2nd April until Monday 12th April inclusive. The Library will be closed during this period for a network upgrade. We will be open from Tuesday13th April to Friday 16th April from 9:00am to 3:pm. The second term resumes on Monday 19th April.

Library Week will be a feature of second term. Mark the week 24-28 May in your Diary and come along and join in the fun and activities. We will have the” Biggest Morning Tea” on Wednesday 26th May to raise money for Cancer research.

Library Soup and Information day

The Library, in conjunction with the Student Association, will be holding a SOUP AND INFORMATION DAY, at the Montgomery St Campus on Thursday 20th August between 12 and 1pm. Do come along and enjoy a free cup of soup and learn about how the Library can help you with your studies. There will be information about the Library and books will be available for you to borrow so don’t forget to bring your TAFEcard with you. Please remind your classmates of this event and bring everyone along. The more the merrier!!!!!!!!!!!

Unmarked books are $1.00. Books with Yellow and blue stickers are $2.00. Books with red and green stickers are $5.00
The book sale is being held on an ongoing basis to clear the Library’s out of date collection.

Our Biggest Morning Tea on Wednesday 27 May, 2009 was a great success with staff and students. For a gold coin donation, people had the privilege of consuming quantities of the delicious Devonshire tea (scones with jam and cream) with tea and/or coffee available. The outcome of this gastronomic gala was $264 combined money from the library and counsellors with proceeds donated to the Cancer Council. Many thanks to all those who participated!

For all those interested in fashion and design, winter is a great time for getting some ideas and inspiration.   One fabulous resource for this is the blogspot The Sartorialist, beloved of fashion designers such as Lisa Ho. Check out the constant stream of new pictures of beautifully dressed ordinary people going about their daily business on the street, in cafes, the park – anywhere…   Do you know any other websites like this you’d like to share? Tell us what you think.

This conference showcased the use of Point-of-view (POV) technology (camera + audio hands free) in vocational education.

We saw some cool MIB type sunglasses that had the camera inbuilt. and how they were used.

Part of the conference dealt with the use of mobile phones.
I got so keen that I made this little video on my mobile phone.

New Photocopy and printing system

The new system is almost upon us.
Remember,
1. You will need your username and password to register.
2. You will need to type in a 4 digit PIN number that you can easily remember.
3. Transfer any credit from your TAFEcard to your account
4. To copy you will need to type your PIN
5. Remember to logout.

New Photocopy and Printing System at St George Library

A new method of paying for photocopying and printing is to be installed in the library on 15 June 2009.

The new system will allow students to credit their TAFEcards using PayPal, EFTPOS or credit card. The existing re-load machine which allows cards to be credited by coins or notes will remain.

Existing money on TAFEcards can be transferred over to the new system using an EFTPOS Kiosk to be installed in the library. Library staff can show you how.

Students will require their DET usernames and passwords the first time they use the system to create a PIN, which is required to release print jobs and start photocopying jobs.

Library week was a terrific success. Competition winners have been notified and nearly all prizes have been collected.

The book sale and the jigsaw are still in progress

At present, until the end of term, we have a hemp fashion display with six mannequins dressed in garments designed and constructed by our Advanced Diploma in Fashion (Stage 1) students from fabrics donated from HEMPGALLERY.com.au.

Sulian Chen’s Experience in St. George Library

Hello,everyone. I am Sulian Chen, I’ve been in Australia for about half a year now. I’m from China. I’m doing the Communication Skills III in the St. George TAFE Library, Kogarah and now I’m doing my Work experience in this library from 27-04-2009 to 1-06-2009. During this period, I’m very lucky to get the chance to gain so much help from the other staff. Although this is my first work experience in the library industry and was challenging, I gained a better experience than I ever expected. I might have made some mistakes and got a little confused during this period but it was a good learning experience.
I’m really appreciate the advice that all the staff gave me during this period. Thank you all!

Australian Library and Information Week is also being used by St George College Library to launch its first ever book sale of old and donated stock.
Most items are only $1 – what a bargain!
The sale will run Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm only, and will continue after Library Week until all items are sold.

Book hospital

Have you ever wanted to know how library staff manage to achieve that super smooth covering with adhesive plastic? Or how repair books that are showing their fair sign of wear and tear?
Come along to our book hospital and find out. You can bring up to 2 of your person books to repair or cover under the expert guidance of library staff.
There will be 8 book hospital sessions altogether – 4 on Monday 25th and 4 on Thursday 28th. No need to book just turn up.

Library week passport

The theme for this years Australian Library and Information Week is: “Libraries : your passport to discovery”. In keeping with this theme St George College Library is running a competition in the form of a passport. Students will need to collect a passport and move around the library identifying one aspect of different facilities. Library staff will remove the student information slip from the passport and enter the student into the prize draw.

More Library Week activites

After the success of the 2008 community jigsaw, the library will be re-running this event in 2009. Last year students and staff of the college helped to complete a 1000 piece jigsaw of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage – this year we are being slightly less ambisious with a 750 piece jigsaw of Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) – don’t worry, we have a back up plan if our talented college community finishes it early in the week.

The children from Kameruka Cottage will be walking down to the library on Tuesday 26th to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime. The book for this year is “Pete the sheep” by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. The children will be singing farm songs, eating farm animal cakes and doing farm craft as part of the celebrations. Come and have a look at the beautiful farm pictures they have made for us to display in the library browsing area.

For those with a sweet tooth try our “Guess the number of M&Ms in the jar competition” – the first correct entry (or closest entry if none are right) wins the yummy jar full of chocolate!!!

Library staff wish to thank the St George College Student Association who have kindly donated 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for our two competitions.
