Gaming in the library??
August 31st, 2009 by ssummersmorrow in library resources
St George College Library has introduced a new service in the form of board games. They have been introduced primarily as a support for literacy and numeracy, but they are also available for recreational use. The games have been generously supplied by the Student Association and if they prove to be popular we would hope that in the coming years we could expand our collection.
Does it seem strange that a library is allowing and even promoting gaming by providing the resources? If you think so consider this, there is a chess club in a public library in America that has been in existence for more than 150 years. Consider also that libraries have long been places where people source answers to crosswords, quizzes and competitions.
In this age where libraries, including academic, are redefining themselves and seeking to be seen as “place” rather than just of learning it is important that we continue to reach out to our clients and provide a range of services that meets their needs.
Do you think having games in the library at St George College is a positive move?
What other games could we try and introduce?
What other services could we provide?
