Counselling and Careers Service

June 11th, 2009 by ssummersmorrow in library services, podcast

Did you know that one of the services provided by TAFENSW is a counselling and careers service? TAFE NSW offers free career and education counselling to current students and people who are intending to study at TAFENSW. All of the counsellors have an extensive knowledge of TAFENSW programs and services, as well as other educational and vocational pathways, so they can help you see ‘the big picture’. At St George College there are 4 counsellors available (part time and full time), including male and female counsellors. Some of the counsellors are bilingual making it easier for students with English as a second language.
St George College Library works closely with the Counselling and Careers Service to ensure that books that the counsellors feel are useful to students are held in the library collection. This includes the recent introduction of the WELLNESS collection, which has a variety of media formats and is a collection of mental health resources. As bonds between the library and the Counselling and Careers Service continue to increase the group student sessions that are held on time management, study skills and the like are going to be held in the library so that the participants will be able to borrow useful resources on what they have just learnt about.

We received a private referral from a Student who didn’t know that student counselling was available to them. Due to limited finances we referred them to the free service at St George and they contacted us three weeks later saying they had received the help they needed.

It is great to see that the service at TAFENSW is known about to the wider counselling community and that students get referred to it.
