The star of the refurbishment is the graphic end panels featuring local wildlife and fauna from Centennial Park. The vibrant images supplied by the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust have smartened up the area and made it a more pleasant place to study for our library community.

Mystery Object Competition Winners

June 6th, 2011 Posted by afeletpezo in library week | Post a Comment »

Shaun (student) drawing winning entry

We have had a fantastic response to the mystery object competition, with many interesting entries (see below).  The winners, Michael Locke and Ivan (student), correctly identified the hole puncher and marking gauge.

The heart shaped hole puncher has a special significance to Randwick Library. It was used in the recent past to confirm if a member’s record was current by ‘hole punching’ the year on the side of the card.  The handcrafted marking gauge (c. 1950s) proved trickier to guess.

A marking gauge is used in woodworking to mark out a line parallel to a reference edge or   surface.

For a week we have had people asking when the competition will be drawn as they were curious to know if their entries were correct.

These are just a few of their responses:

Hole puncher: bus or train ticket puncher, ski lift pass clicker, card decorating

Marking gauge:  padlock, hammer, making holes in wood, carpenter’s leveller, clamp, string holder for measuring distance, used for leather shoe repairs, carving wooden statues, tool for windows

Let’s Talk Recognition – National Reconciliation Week

May 23rd, 2011 Posted by cwright3 in Events Calendar | Post a Comment »

Aboriginal resources on Display at Randwick College Library

National Reconciliation week  is an annual event that stimulates discussion about reconciliation and what it means to all of us. The week is framed by two key anniversaries for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme of this year’s week is “Let’s talk recognition” and how you interpret that is entirely up to you, it can be any event that opens up discussion on the topic. For ideas and details on how others are celebrating and commemorating the event please go to  http://www.reconciliation.org.au/.

As you will have seen in a previous blog entry, the 26th of May is National Sorry Day which commemorates the anniversary of the apology to the Stolen Generations.

The 3rd of June marks the High Court’s landmark Mabo decision in 1992 which gave legal recognition to the special relationship Indigenous people have to the land. This recognition paved the way for Indigenous land rights known as Native Title.

To highlight National Reconciliation Week 2011 we have created a display within the library.  Please come along to the library to have a look. All of the display items are available for  borrowing.
