St George weeks 1-2
August 6th, 2008 by MariaRosa Ochoa in LTM report
Progress so far:
Monday
Immediate response from Architecture. Organised initial meeting for Tuesdady to elicit suitable technologies.
Also met with CGVE coordinator. Organise meeting with teachers.
Sent second email to HTS: with surveys for teachers.
Sent email to Adep & Teaching & Learning Manager suggesting meeting. As a result: invited to attend Teaching & Learning Team meeting.
Tuesday
Meeting with Architecture & Later on 1st workshop on ebeam capture. Very enthusiastic about it. I posted their practice on their wiki. IT (Toula) had suggested they ask permission to upload ebeam program temporarily onto their laptops, as for captivate and ebeam interactive they will need the software on the same pc as their architectural software. HT to send email to IT & ask. Denied permission.
Podcasting workshop with 2 ESOL teachers. We create one podcast to upload into Let’s Talk. The see the whole process and one of the teachers went straight to the shop to get the last Belkin microphone available!
Meeting with one CGVE teacher to talk about possible technology (wiki & possibly podcasting) & set up meeting for next Tuesday with 2 other teachers.
Thursday
Organise for a third ESOL teacher to come to next podcasting meeting.
Attend T&L College Team meeting with Adep. Very useful at last to hear how they went about choosing sections and how the sections had nominated specific technologies in their business plans. I ask to be sent list of those technologies, which I’ve already recived. Told by Adep to be aware of the fact taht there are restrictions re resources. There is only one ebeam available in the college. The software can’t be installed in any other laptop but the one in the library, so it’s going to be difficult for the teachers to practise and use it in class. I suggest sharing of resources between colleges.
Languages workshop & class practice: blog & wiki, esolf2f(2 teachers: Marion & Robert)
First Friday LTM meeting: Deb Lidsell, Bron Crawford & myself: itunes & ipods
Week 2
Monday
Attend Building Mangagement Staff meeting: decide to work with Cristina on wikis & moodle (she’s a competent user of both and has already got a blog, which has been updated in the blogroll). Meet her on Tuesday: issues arise, mainly lack of time to do her online job and lack of interest.
Organise Moodle session for this section & others to be held Tuesday 19th August.
Tuesday
Workshop with Architects: captivate. Issue: won’t be able to practise unless they’ve got the software in their pcs. Search for answers (Paulis suggests CamStudio, I’ll look into CaptureCamPro.
Wednesday
CGVE meeting: teacher & coordinator: wiki
Languages workshop: Blogging (Matt): Matt’s Class Blog
Languages workshop in class: Robert: wiki: Olympic games
Wei Dong: Podcasting & wikis: Wei Dong’s ESOL 1 podcasts
Emails re issues & surveys: Pre-skills reminders; software needs & time issues
Podcast: Play in new window | Download

I am pleased to see the progress of St George College staff using technology in their teaching. The Languages (ESOL) staff are engaging their students in very creative ways. I think I would enjoy being in these classes and I would learn a great deal.
It will be good to see other sections use technology as a standard tool and it is not seen as something special. The Learning Technology Mentor role is a valuable one to spread the news and capability across the college. Rosa – Keep up the effort with the sections especially the ones which have the highest priority.

Great work Rosa, you are off to a great start. It must be great to have such support at St George. Thanks Di for your comments-its amazing to see you supporting this initiative in such a positive way

Thanks Di & Julie for your support and encouragement.
I’ve added a couple of links to this post to make it more clear what some of the sections are doing. I had posted the Architecture work on their wiki, but it has since been upgraded. Cristina from Building has had a moodle, wiki & blog for a while. She has just got a new blog to replace her old one, so we’ll see her work transferred there shortly.

Rosa your links are especially useful to show other teachers if you think this is permissable. And thanks for being our guiding light in Friday mentors support sessions.

Go ahead Bronwyn and thanks to you too, because I learn a lot on Fridays from you and Deb!
