Aboriginal Teacher and Mentor for Construction Students

The Yulang Aboriginal Education and Training Unit are working with Aboriginal teacher Gavin Lester to provide teacher support in Construction and Carpentry classes at Randwick TAFE, as well as, act as a mentor for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander apprentices within SI TAFE. 

Gavin is well know in the community for both his ten year career in the National Rugby League where he played for Canterbury Bulldogs and Sydney Rooters and also as a pioneer in building participation,training and apprentice opportunities for our students.

Benefits of this partnership include:-

• Better retention rates of  our students
• Students remaining in TAFE because of their positive experience
• to identify and provide student support in the form of a tutor
• to act as an advocate when required for students
• to develop and maintain a  database of students skills to identify gaps in training
• to research and encourage students to undertake extra short courses e.g. Tag Testing, Elevated Work Platform and First Aid which will be of benefit to both the student and employer.
