The Australian Flexible Learning Framework has been exploring the use of ePortfolios in the educational context since 2008.

In 2009 they began funding national trials of ePortfolios.

On 2010 three registered training organisations (RTOs) were awarded funding to implement and trial an e-portfolio system to support learner transitions. Conducted over six months during 2010, these trials also adopted the Framework’s VET E-portfolios Privacy Draft Guidelines, and provided feedback about their usability and ‘adoptability’, as well as developed resources to support learners’ understanding of privacy risks when using an e-portfolio system. Click here to read more about these trials.

Each year a conference is held will brings together national and international educators and thought leaders to showcase the ways e-portfolio practice is making a difference to adult education in Australia.

The 2011 conference, titled “ePortfolios Australia Conference 2011 (EAC2011)” will be held at Curtin University, Perth on the 17-18 October 2011

Synopsis

Round table discussion regarding a eprtfolio questionnaire put out by education.au

Present: Alan Bevan education.au, Paula Williams, Paulis Cheung, Stephan Ridgway, Tessa Bachmayer & Jenny Barlow

Questions

Protecting e-portfolio content

1. What types of content could be stored on an e-portfolio? How would you classify them?

2. Who owns this content? Do the ownership rules need to be changed for different types of content?

3. Do you think privacy and security issues vary depending on the type of content? How?

4. Privacy legislation places an onus on an organisation to ‘take reasonable steps to protect the personal information it holds from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.’ What do you think such ‘reasonable steps’ might be for student e-portfolio information?

Access

5. What categories of users might be given access to some or all of an e-portfolio? What might be the circumstances governing this access? Who should decide who is given access?

6. Do you have any thoughts about how the various users of an e-portfolio might initially have their identities confirmed and then authenticated each time they visit?

7. What impact might third party access have on security and privacy issues?

Content verification

8. Who should have the ability to publish and update content in an individual’s e-portfolio?

9. How might the authenticity of content published in an e-portfolio be verified?

External institutional content

10. What types of information are held externally that may be of value for an individual’s eportfolio?

11. Can you suggest ways in which this content could be accessed for e-portfolio purposes?

12. If the learner wished to include some of this content in his/her e-portfolio (e.g. achievement data), how might this be verified? Could there be different types of verification for different types of content, e.g. RPL, employability skills, assessment, employment, testimonials?

Definition of learner

13. If learners are to be given certain rights and privileges with regard to the use of an e-portfolio, there may need to be some consistency in the definition of learner. How would you define a ‘learner’ for the purposes of e-portfolio management?
