Changes to DET web Filtering for TAFE students under 18

As of June 30 a new Internet Browsing filtering role is being introduced for TAFE NSW students who are under the age of 18.

Until June 30 2010, TAFE NSW students had the ‘TAFE student’ filtering role applied to their DET User ID. This meant that all TAFE students, regardless of being under 18 had the same filtering levels applied to their internet access.

Following a business review, the TAFE student role will be split into two distinct roles:

• students 18 years of age and over
• students under 18 years of age

There will be different internet browsing (filtering) rules applied to these two roles:

The internet browsing rules applied to the previous ‘TAFE student’ role are now applicable only to TAFE NSW students 18 years of age and over, while TAFE NSW students under 18 will have the same rules applied to their internet use as year 11 and 12 school students.

End user impact:

Access to certain websites will be restricted for TAFE students under the age of 18 as a result of the change.

The most notable changes of the new restricted access for TAFE Students under 18 will in preventing access to the following:

• YouTube;
• Email systems not provided by DET via the DET Portal;
• Sites/URLs that have not yet been categorized by the filtering software vendor;
• Sites/URLs in these categories: Adult/Mature Content, Alcohol, Auctions, Blogs/Personal Pages, Chat/Instant Messaging, Email, Games, Greeting Cards, Newsgroups/Forums, Online Meetings, Online Storage, Open/Mixed Content, Radio/Audio Stream, Software Downloads, Tobacco & Web Hosting
