Keeping on top of your blogs etc

We’ll talk a little about RSS this week as a  means of subscribing to this blog and other favourite sites. It works by pulling a summary of info from your favourite sites to a central location. Here’s a good intro video about RSS …

YouTube Preview Image

There are a range of options for this central hub but one that many find useful is the personal ‘homepage’ (named because you can easily set this to boot up whenever you open your browser. It can include lists, links, RSS feeds, maps, videos etc etc. There are a few services around that provide this but the one I like is Pageflakes (its nice looking and sharable). Here’s how to set it up:

1. Go to http://www.pageflakes.com

You’ll see a model setup with boxes called ‘flakes’. Check out the types of things there by default.

2. Delete flakes you don’t want by clicking on the X in the top right corner or edit them by clicking on the EDIT button also in the top right.

3. Click on the MENU circular button in the top right of the screen. This is the backend of your homepage where you can customise the look, layout and flakes you have available. You’ll see some lists of possible ‘flakes’ at the top of the screen. Look over tot he left and you’ll see the menu bar in dark grey.

4. Change your theme and layout to suit you.

5. Browse flakes for options – weather, games, sport, tools, reminders etc are all there. You’ll need to click the yellow oval shaped button ‘browse all flakes’ to be able to search. When you find something you like click ‘ADD TO MY PAGE’ and return to the page to edit it. Click on the envelope to share the flake you’ve set up with others. Here’s one with an RSS feed for this blog – http://www.pageflakes.com/RO.aspx?pff=S3TFXlv2oEKFQ1aE3vJySg

6. In the very top right of the screen you’ll see the account creation link and also where you can activate your pageflake to become your homepage.

7. The other useful function in pageflakes is the ability to have multiple pages of flakes. If you look along the top left edge of your pageflakes page you’ll see tabs under the word PAGEFLAKES. You can give these a title and create more. Flakes can be dragged around.

Apart from the basic setup its just a matter of trying things out and making it your own.

well,  i’m  continuing  to  familiarise  myself  with  this  procedure.   I’ve  put  the  thing  on  “my  favorites”,  which  makes it  easier to  access.

So,  “blog ” is  like  a discussion ?    Well,   i guess  i’m  talking  to  myself  here !   communication   is  the  pinnacle  of  evolution  of  mankind  and

i’d  like to  feel that   i  can  contribute  to  this  ongoing  process  of  people  getting  closer in the mind,  to  others.  Let’s  see  what transpires.

for peter R

well,  what  i want to say is ….that for peter R ,  who  has  the distance  people in  audiometry ,  how  is this  thing    ’good ” ?   like  ,what i  mean  is , peter  obviously  has a life , and  can’t   sit  at his  computer    24/7   ,  ” blogging on “     continually  ( like  me  , i’m  an insomniac)   .  but  what  i  mean  is , that  what  are the  expectations  of  people  in respect of   response  to  this  technology ?    like,  if  i  telephone  someone  and leave  a message,  i  expect  a reply   asap.  if  not,  i  drop  them  quick.   my time  is  just  as important as theirs.    so,  for  peter,  who  , i  understand   will use  this  thing  more than  others,  i feel  a nonchalant  response  from  any  party  is  counterproductive  to the process.  in  other words,  i’m  saying that  peter   should  feel  defensive  in the sense  that  , he  would  not , i’m  sure,  like  to  put his  hand  up  to  be ” on tap “   to  respond  to  stuff  ,  as if   he  was  at  the desk  24/7. the  fact  i  am  writing  this  ,  tells  you  that i  am  interested.   mj .            i  might  add,  i am  not  interested  in   a  24/7   access   scenario.   mj

addiction

obviously,  this  could  become  another  of my  illicit  addictions.  but  hopefully  a useful one !  i  am  trying  to  remember  why  i am  doing this.  nice  pinot  gris  i’m  drinking  at  present.   i  looked up  “blog” in oxford   dic.   oxford  doesn’t  afford  “blog’ an  entry.  that’s  why  i  am  having   difficulty !!!!!!!!!!!!    no  doubt   i  have  a lot to learn…again  and  i  am  enthusiastic  to  allow  further  neural  connections  to  consolidate  !   are  these  ravings  accessible   to  all &  sundry ?  what  about  the  poor  bastards  in  Cairo ?  mj

We’re launching this blog as a means to capture our reflections, resources and issues during our 2011 Australian Flexible Learning Framework Innovations Project. Hopefully it will have a life beyond the project for staff connections, collaboration and for student and industry engagement.

Our Cyberears project aims to redesign an existing course – the Diploma of Hearing Device Prescription and Evaluation – to meet the needs of dispersed and diverse students who require flexible, fast-tracked certification. The students are predominantly workplace based and come together for face to face blocks. We will be focusing on Block 1 for the project; reviewing, adapting, designing activities, resources and assessment tasks using Moodle as a hub and workplace contexts as centrepoint for activity.

You can track our experiences by clicking on the Cyberears Project blog category.
