Technical Officer and part-time teacher Brad Traynor recently published a paper “Observations of the Heath Monitor Varanus rosenbergi (varanidae): a record from Gambo Hill near Rylstone, New South Wales” in Herpetofauna 2010, vol. 40, no. 1, pp. 58-62. Varanus rosenbergi is a large terrestrial monitor adapted to the cooler regions of southern Australia. In his paper Brad records the sighting of an individual monitor in an area north-west of the previously reported distribution of the species in NSW. The monitor was observed feeding on rabbits from their warrens and this sighting suggests that the species is more common in the area west of the Blue Mountains that previously thought.
