Brad Traynor paper on the Heath Monitor

Technical Officer and part-time teacher Brad Traynor recently published a paper “Observations of the Heath Monitor Varanus rosenbergi (varanidae): a record from Gambo Hill near Rylstone, New South Wales” in Herpetofauna 2010, vol. 40, no. 1, pp. 58-62. Varanus rosenbergi is a large terrestrial monitor adapted to the cooler regions of southern Australia. In his paper Brad records the sighting of an individual monitor in an area north-west of the previously reported distribution of the species in NSW. The monitor was observed feeding on rabbits from their warrens and this sighting suggests that the species is more common in the area west of the Blue Mountains that previously thought.

Chris Brownlee from the Garvan visits Allied Health

Flow cytometry manager at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Chris Brownlee, visited Allied Health and Life Sciences recently to give a talk to students on his work and publicise job opportunities at the Garvan. In his talk he outlined the process of separating and identifying cell types using laser technology of cell sorters. A podcast of his talk can be found below.

New Enrolments for 2011

On 31/1/11 approximately 159 students enrolled for the first time in all Stages of Allied Health and Life Science courses.  A warm welcome was extended to the new students by Jeanette Ramos and Paul Armson, Head Teachers for the section.  Several members of the teaching staff were given the opportunity to introduce themselves, giving some indication of the sort of activities the students could expect over the course. While most students were enrolling in Stage 1 there were a significant number of students enrolling for the first time in Stage 3 and Stage 4 levels of the Diploma courses due to recognition of prior learning (RPL) from their previous university qualifications or work experience.

Welcome to the Allied Health & Life Sciences Blog.   The purpose of this blog is to communicate information and the activities of staff and students at Allied Health & Life Sciences at Ultimo campus of the Sydney Institute.  Our section delivers courses in environmental science, pathology and food technology (for more information on sepcific courses see the About Pages at right).  Our graduates are employed in hospitals, private companies and government institutions.  We have close ties with industry and our courses are recognised by a number of universities including the University of Technology (UTS), the University of Wollongong and the University of Western Sydney.
