Changes to DET web Filtering for TAFE students under 18

July 23rd, 2010 Posted by sridgway in Elearning | Post a Comment »

As of June 30 a new Internet Browsing filtering role is being introduced for TAFE NSW students who are under the age of 18.

Until June 30 2010, TAFE NSW students had the ‘TAFE student’ filtering role applied to their DET User ID. This meant that all TAFE students, regardless of being under 18 had the same filtering levels applied to their internet access.

Following a business review, the TAFE student role will be split into two distinct roles:

  • students 18 years of age and over
  • students under 18 years of age

There will be different internet browsing (filtering) rules applied to these two roles:

The internet browsing rules applied to the previous ‘TAFE student’ role are now applicable only to TAFE NSW students 18 years of age and over, while TAFE NSW students under 18 will have the same rules applied to their internet use as year 11 and 12 school students.

End user impact:

Access to certain websites will be restricted for TAFE students under the age of 18 as a result of the change.

The most notable changes of the new restricted access for TAFE Students under 18 will in preventing access to the following:

  • YouTube;
  • Email systems not provided by DET via the DET Portal;
  • Sites/URLs that have not yet been categorized by the filtering software vendor;
  • Sites/URLs in these categories: Adult/Mature Content, Alcohol, Auctions, Blogs/Personal Pages, Chat/Instant Messaging, Email, Games, Greeting Cards, Newsgroups/Forums, Online Meetings, Online Storage, Open/Mixed Content, Radio/Audio Stream, Software Downloads, Tobacco & Web Hosting

A full copy of release notes summarising the changes and links to the relevant filtering categories, filtering groups and access levels see the DET intranet link below

WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” released

June 23rd, 2010 Posted by sridgway in blogging | Post a Comment »

WordPress released version 3.0 of it’s flagship blogging platform yesterday. This is the thirteenth major release of WordPress and the culmination of half a year of work by 218 contributors. Wordpress is off course what we use here @ TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute for our blogging platform, although we use Wordpress MU or multi user which allows many blogs to run under the one install. The good news is that the fork between WordPress single user and WP multi users has now converged into the one platform. This great news and a major feature upgrade to and already fabulous blogging platform.

Watch the video above and for and overview of the release and read the official blog post for more information. In this post there is also a great presentation by the founder of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg at the 2010 State of the Word speech at WordCamp San Francisco,  discussing the origins and evolution of WordPress, the philosophy of WordPress and what they are planning for the future.

We update our platform once we are confident that it won’t break our install and any of our plugins. We will keep you posted on developments :>

Ultimo TAFE events management students held their own flash mob event at Central Station, much to the surprise of passing patrons.

The event was a great success, with over 100 dancers making their move to help raise money for Westmead Medical Research Foundation & ‘The Move Movement’.

Thank you to all involved – especially Urban Dance Centre and choreographer Nikki Britton.  The Youtube clip was filmed by Randwick TAFE screen and media students, produced and edited by Janusz Dareck.
